If you're breastfeeding and feel like you could eat the whole pantry at 10pm, you're not weak and you're not doing anything wrong. Nursing hunger is real.
I nursed four boys, and with every one of them the food noise was relentless. Here's why it happens and what actually helped me quiet it, without cutting calories or hurting my milk.
Why breastfeeding makes you so hungry
- Making milk takes a lot of energy. Your body uses hundreds of extra calories a day to produce it.
- Sleep deprivation turns up your hunger hormones. Short sleep raises ghrelin and lowers leptin, so you feel hungrier and less satisfied.
- Blood sugar crashes. Grab-and-go carbs spike and drop your blood sugar, and the drop brings cravings.
- Not enough protein. Your body keeps sending hunger signals until it gets the protein it needs.
What about GLP-1 medications?
I get asked this every day. GLP-1 medications aren't recommended while breastfeeding because there isn't enough research on their safety for babies. The good news is your body already makes its own GLP-1, and there's a lot you can do to support it naturally.
7 supply-safe ways to quiet food noise
1. Don't undereat. This sounds backwards, but cutting too much makes food noise louder and can affect your supply. Aim for slow, steady progress.
2. Protein at breakfast, within an hour of waking. This sets up your hunger hormones for the whole day. A shake with Milk Dust is my go-to.
3. Protein + fiber at every snack. Apple and nut butter, eggs and berries, yogurt with chia. Protein and fiber both nudge your natural GLP-1.
4. Build a nursing station snack kit. Water bottle plus a protein snack where you nurse, so you're not starving after every feed.
5. Drink before you snack. Breastfeeding makes you thirsty, and thirst often feels like hunger.
6. Cut back on added sugar. The more sugar you eat, the louder the cravings get. Try my free 15-Day Sugar Detox Challenge.
7. Support your natural GLP-1. Protein, fiber and steady blood sugar are the base. A natural GLP-1 supplement can add support on top.

The bottom line
Food noise while breastfeeding is your body asking for fuel, not a willpower problem. Feed it protein and fiber, keep your blood sugar steady, drink your water, and support your natural GLP-1. The cravings get quieter, and your supply stays strong. 💛
