75 Day Hard Challenge While Breastfeeding, Yes or No?

If you've been on Tik Tok or social media at all, you probably have heard of the 75 day hard challenge, where people embark on a crazy fitness challenge for 75 days. It really isn't that crazy, but it is more than just a weight loss program. The 75 hard challenge also focuses on being outside, reading non fiction books and drinking lots of water. It requires a much larger time commitment than your typical work out challenges, and it can really be a lot for a new breastfeeding mom. I personally think it is an amazing challenge to transform your mind and body if you can do it, but realistically doing it while you are breastfeeding a new baby is definitely hard. 

I have some ideas on how you can do the soft challenge, or make som modifiacations for breastfeeding. The 75 Hard Challenge only needs a few modifications in order to make it feasible for postpartum, while still achieving the changes and weight loss. First, I will go over what the 75 Hard Challenge is, and the rules, so you know exactly what I'm talking about, then I will go over how you can modify it to fit breastfeeding, but still have the same success!

What is this 75 Hard Challenge?

The 75 Hard Challenge was created by Andy Frisella. I think it is really important to learn a little about who the person behind the challenge is.

Andy Frisella is an entrepreneur, speaker, and author known for his work in the fields of business, self-improvement, and motivation. He is the co-founder of several successful companies, including 1st Phorm International and the supplement superstore chain Supplement Superstores. These are large stores, and I think we can agree that Andy Frisella has accomplished a lot. He’s probably accomplished these businesses by living in a way that is like the 75 Hard Challenge.

Frisella also gained widespread recognition for his podcast, “The MFCEO Project” (The Mother F***ing CEO Project), where he shares insights on entrepreneurship, personal development, and success mindset. Through his podcast and social media presence, he has amassed a large following and has become a respected figure in the self-help and business communities. I didn’t know about this podcast until researching him, so I have yet to listen to it, but I have a feeling I am going to love it.

One of Frisella’s notable contributions is the creation of the “75 Hard Challenge,” a rigorous self-improvement program aimed at developing mental toughness and discipline. This challenge has garnered significant attention and has inspired countless individuals to pursue personal growth and transformation. I’ve been in the fitness and nutrition industry for years, and I’ve done many of the diet plans like Paleo and Whole 30, low carb and more. Ultimately I’ve found that eating clean, whole foods most of the time consistently, rather than doing a 30-day program is the best, but I actually love the concept of the 75 Hard Challenge. I think that it takes longer than 30-60 days to really build a habit, which is what you want for long-term, sustainable change. The 75 Hard Challenge also gives a lot of freedom within the strict rules, which allows people to choose their path. It’s kind of like a choose-your-own direction book wihin the confines of the program guidelines. Let’s get into what this 75 Hard Challenge is, andif you should give it a try!

75 Hard Challenge Overview + Rules:

It is designed to cultivate mental toughness, discipline, and resilience through a series of daily tasks. The challenge typically involves the following rules:

  1. Follow a strict diet: Participants are required to adhere to a diet without any cheat meals or alcohol for the duration of the challenge. The specific diet may vary based on individual preferences or goals.
  2. Exercise twice a day: Each day, participants must complete two workouts, each at least 45 minutes long. One of these workouts must be outdoors, regardless of the weather conditions.
  3. Drink a gallon of water: Participants are required to drink at least one gallon (approximately 3.8 liters) of water per day.
  4. Read 10 pages of a non-fiction book: Every day, participants must read at least 10 pages of a non-fiction book aimed at personal or professional development.
  5. Take a progress photo: Participants must take a daily progress photo to track their physical transformation throughout the challenge.
  6. No cheat days: There are no days off or cheat days allowed during the 75-day period. If any of the daily tasks are not completed, participants must restart the challenge from day one.

Should you do the 75 Hard Challenge to lose the baby weight?

I think if you can do it, YES! But, can you committ to the rules and stick to them with a new baby? That is is the real question to ask yourself. I personally don't think I could committ to two, 45-minute workouts a day with a new baby. Following the right diet plan while breastfeeding is also really important. You want to make sure that you start a diet plan that is really focused on nutrients more than anything. If you have a lot of nutrients, you will be able to keep your milk supply up, while aso losing weight at the same time. Nutrients are key to hormone balance, which is a major factor in lactation. 

The 75 Hard Challenge will also push you to get your workouts in, but make sure you have clearance from your doctor to start workout out again. If you are slowly getting back in shape, choose strength-building exercise like Pilates to develop a good foundation, and add a lot of walking and low impact cardio to build your cardio base back up. 75 Hard Challenge Modifications for Breastfeeding: 

Use a milk-supply booster:

As I mentioned, I think for the challenge you can really do any diet plan as long as you have a milk supply supplement like Milk Dust. If you don't, it could be too risky for your milk supply, or you may notice a drop in your supply that will cause you to give up all together. Making sure you are supporting your body with the right herbs, nutrients and vitamins is really important while breastfeeding. 

Modify the workout requirements: 

Getting in two workouts at 45 minutes each is a lot. I would modify this to include one 30-45 minute workout, with 45 minutes of walking total. This would be a quick workout when baby is sleeping, then you can walk for 10-15 minutes at a time while wearing baby or pushing baby in the stroller, to total 45 minutes. This is definitely more achievable with a new baby, and as baby gets older, you can add in more workout time. 

Use audio books rather than reading: 

The 75 Hard Challenge requires you to read 10 pages of a non-fiction book each day. I think reading is really hard when you are tired with a newborn, but audio books are great to listen to while walking, breastfeeding, or taking care of baby around the house. I love the concept of learning something every day, but when I was breastfeeding, if I tried to read 10 pages I would fall asleep. Grab an audio book, or even a podcast for your extra learning, and that will be just perfect. 

 Keep the 1 gallon of water a day rule!

Water is going to help with breastfeeding! Keep the gallon of water drinking rule as much as you can. Add in a little seasalt if you can for hydration, and you will help keep your milk supply up! Hydration is really important when breastfeeding, so this is a necessary part of the challenge. 

Should you do the 75 Hard Challenge while breastfeeding?

Absolutely! With the modifications I suggested, I think new mothers can be super successful in this challenge without losing their milk supply. Ultimately, if you can keep up with this challenge with a breastfeeding baby, imagine what you can do as baby gets older? Things only get easier and easier as baby goes into being a toddler and a little child, so you can achieve so much if you push yourself through this challenge now. I am a huge proponent of at least trying. Even if you only make it 20 days, that's an amazing 20 days of health and wellness for you and baby!
